The beauty that I observe in Monarch Butterflies and Milkweed Seeds make wonderful subject matter for watercolor and reflection.
The Monarch has such beautiful wings. They coast and glide, circle and loop. They move fast in zig-zag patterns. In this butterfly watercolor, I am thankful that Monarchs find my garden where they have space to be themselves...wild and free.
In the fall, I find beauty in the white silk attached to each seed. When I open a Milkweed pod, it is tightly packed with flat brown Milkweed seeds in perfect order. The sun and the wind loosen up the package and they begin to take flight one-by-one.
Beautiful Milkweed seeds have a special purpose in this World. The existence of the Monarch Butterfly depends on it. Because the Monarch was designed to fly to North and South America, it makes sense that the seeds from Milkweed plants were designed to fly too.
Sometimes Milkweed seeds can take multiple flights. When the morning dew grounds the seeds in the grass, the noon sun can dry the silk to be fluffy again. When fully dry, the wind picks the seeds up again and the journey continues.
This short video shows how delicate and beautiful Milkweed Seeds are. Their fine white silk is illuminated by the sun as they fly.
